SHERMAN, TX -- A Sherman synagogue burglarized and vandalized over the weekend, and whoever did it made off with a sacred item valued at $40,000.
Sherman Police say someone broke into the Temple Beth Emeth on North Rusk and took the synagogue's Torah on Friday.
The Torah is the most holy of the sacred writings in Judaism. It is stored in the holiest spot within a synagogue, the Aron Kodesh, or “Holy Ark.”
Synagogue President Andy Favor says a crime like this is devastating.
"The worst thing is that the Torah, the most sacred thing that we, as Jews, have, is gone," Favor says.
The interior of the synagogue was also vandalized. No word on any suspects.
