A major Johnston County employer has announced its cutting its workforce. Sundowner Trailer Inc. in Coleman has laid off about 13 percent of its workforce, officials said.
A company spokesman says at least 60 employees were let go because of slow sales. Some workers were given their final paychecks just before their shift ended, leaving many in obvious dismay.
Prior to Thursday's announcement, some employees said they noticed their hours were being cut, but none interviewed said they expected to lose their jobs.
18 year veteran Jimmie Edwards was among those let go Thursday.
"It's a big shock. I'm still shocked. I still can't believe after almost 18 years, I'm let go. I mean me and my wife and a lot of my friends," Edwards said.
