Senate Committee Fuels Gas Tax Hike

(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A Senate committee approved a bill Tuesday that would allow voters to decide if they want to raise fuel taxes to repair roads and bridges. House Bill 2632 would raise gasoline taxes by five cents a gallon and diesel taxes by eight cents a gallon over three years.

The increase would produce $145 million annually for repair and maintenance of highways and bridges. Enid state Senator Robert Milacek authored the measure. He says one of Oklahoma's most serious problems is its deteriorating highways and bridges.

Milacek's proposal would place the issue on the November general
election ballot. He says Oklahoma's gasoline tax rate of 17 cents a gallon would go to 22 cents a gallon, about the same rates in surrounding state.
