HOWE- A freak accident sent debris crashing into Howe’s city hall on East Hanning Street this afternoon.

Officials say the side of the building became unstable, toppled over, and crashed through the roof of City Hall.

They say construction workers were in the process of demolishing the second floor of the building when they miscalculated and cut through a vital rafter, causing the side of the building to collapse.

City officials say the building was old and in poor condition.

"It's been in pretty bad shape and the guy that owns it decided to start re-doing and up keeping it, and like I say, it's just an unfortunate accident," said Steven McKay, Howe city manager.

Authorities say there was one person in city hall at the time. Fortunately no one was injured.
