Sex Businesses Restricted in Ardmore

4-8-04 - Some new codes are hitting the books in Ardmore, aimed at restricting where sexually oriented businesses can reside within city limits. During a city planning commission meeting Thursday, a packed house watched as city leaders voted for the new ordinance.

The trouble began when Christie's Toybox requested zoning information last fall, wanting to put an adult novelty store inside city limits. City hall had no restrictions at the time, so Christie’s was able to move in along I-35, across from a neighborhood.

The resulting public outcry convinced city leaders of the need to make some changes. The new ordinance will keep adult stores 1,000 feet away from schools, parks, churches, and places of public gathering.

The ordinance will not affect Christie’s, because it was already in place before the ordinance was voted into code.
