Deputy Struck- Suspect Drives Into Lake Texoma

04-15-04 -A Grayson County Deputy was hit by a car early this morning in an incident that finally ended when the suspect drove into Lake Texoma. It happened around 1:20 am. Deputy Joe Ross observed a car pulling in and out of three separate driveways in Denison. When Ross pulled over and got out the driver James Darrel Johnson sped toward him hitting him and knocking him to the ground. The Deputy then got back in his car and began pursuit.
The chase reached speeds of 70 mph before Johnson ran over road spikes blowing out his tires. He then drove into the Pottsboro community of Hi-Land Shores speeding over a boat ramp and into Lake Texoma. Deputy Rickey Wheeler then jumped into the water detaining Johnson.
Deputy Ross was taken to Texoma Medical Center where he was treated and released. Johnson is now in the Grayson County Jail. He is facing several charges including aggravated assault on a public servant.
