There's no doubt barbecue is a part of the way of life in north Texas and southern Oklahoma, so all this month on First News at Six we're taking a special inside look at some of the unique people and places that bring the true spirit of southern culture alive Our first trip is to Knollwood, Texas. Here's Daniel Armbruster.
Tucked away in the corner of Knollwood Road and Knollwood Drive is Smokey D's Bar-B-Que. It's what some would call one of the best kept secrets in Texoma.
"I was told it was the best in town, but I don't know," says customer Robert Burns.
Denison native Dale Bryant is the owner of this humble Barbecue stand in Knollwood known as Smokey D's Bar-B-Que. Bryant started the business just more than a year ago with a smoker in the back, and a small trailer to prepare and serve food for the soul.
It's Bryant's simple way of doing something he enjoys.
"I love doing it and I'll never stop doing it," he says.
Bryant says business at Smokey D's was slow at first, but with the help of word of mouth advertisement, things are starting to pick up, and the locals are taking notice.
"I had heard about this place and decided I had better check it out."
Sherman resident Robert Burns says after one trip he became a regular at Smokey D's.
"When I'm going to eat barbecue at home, I'm going to eat it here."
Folks from miles around come to Smokey D's Bar-B-Que, but it's their famous brown gravy that keeps them coming back.
"They gravy is awesome."
"I heard that it had the gravy that everybody talks about."
Bryant says there are some special ingredients but he's not giving any secrets away.
"The gravy I have is awesome. It's the flavor it has and the texture and the spicy kick is has to it."
For other regulars it's all about the meat. There's chicken, pulled pork, sausage, brisket, and Frank Lyon's favorite…
"The rib dinners. Nicely smoked, nice sauce," he says.
So whether it's a good barbecue sandwich or you’re just dying for a taste of the famous brown gravy Smokey D's has just watch your taste buds are looking for.
