LUELLA, TX -- Three children were taken to the hospital this afternoon after a school bus and passenger car collided near Tom Bean as the bus was dropping kids off after school. Josh Stevenson has more.

It was just before 4:00 p.m. when the call went out.. A Tom Bean school bus with 35 children on-board, struck by another vehicle.

"The hospital was on standby, the County EOC was activated, we were as prepared as we could be for a situation like this," said Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones.

The Sherman Fire Department responded to assist Tom Bean with rescue operations.

"We initiated our mass casualty response which brings together a lot of manpower and equipment in case they were needed by Tom Bean," Chief Jones said.

A Whitewright EMS crew was first on the scene.

"There were very few injuries and those injuries were non-life-threatening," said Jones.

Texas State Troopers say a passenger car was northbound on Luella Road when the car drifted to the right. The driver overcorrected and smashed into the front right fender of the bus.

Tom Bean School Superintendent Kathy Garrison says the accident could have been much worse.

"It was a minor accident, there were non-life-threatening injuries, we have transported three children to wilson N. Jones hospital for evaluation and observation," said Garrison.

The Tom Bean School District also activated its emergency response plan, that helped parents find out if their children were hurt and sped up the process of either getting kids evaluated at the hospital, or sent home.

Superintendent Garrison says the actions taken by the bus driver are to be commended.

"She handled it very professionally and very responsibly," said Garrison.

The driver of the sedan was also transported to the hospital, his condition is still unknown at this time.
