In the final installment of our BBQ Texoma series, Daniel Armbruster didn't have to go far to find a place that adds a flare to some good old smoked barbecue as he checked out OO Smokehouse in downtown Sherman.
This week we're in downtown Sherman at the corner of Lamar and Montgomery at the OO Smokehouse. It's world class barbecue with a taste of its own.
As soon as you drive up, the aroma of southern smoked barbecue takes over your senses. Kevin Ooten and his father have owned this humble barbecue restaurant for 12 years.
"[We] decided we'd just open up a new business and do something we really enjoyed," Ooten says.
Kevin Ooten's father, Wayne, is there at six in the morning to get things started. Then Kevin comes in after noon and stays until 3 in the morning to ensure the meats are smoked just right, and the regulars take notice.
"It's like what I was raised on. To me, it's a better taste. It's got the smoky flavor that I like," said Slade Graham.
Besides all of the traditional barbecue food at OO's Smokehouse, a lot of folks come for the stuffed peppers, which come with cheddar cheese or cream cheese and sausage inside.
The OO's staff recently started making homemade tamales as well, and just in time for Turkey Day you can bring your Thanksgiving turkey in and they will smoke it for you. Just make sure you call ahead, and you'll be greeted with a smiling face. After all, Ooten says making people from all different walks of life happy is his favorite part of the job.
"It's all the unique people we get to meet. You know we get to meet people from every state. We've had people from Alaska and Hawaii come down. And everybody that comes to Texas says one of the first things they want to do is try the barbecue.”
