Finding jail funding

DURANT -- Bryan County jail authorities are trying to agree on ways to pay for the facility. The Jail Trust Authority proposed increasing fees to cities that house municipal inmates in the jail.

Opponents to the plan say city police forces could easily bypass those fees by booking inmates on county charges instead. Other ideas include closing the auxiliary jail, but officials say the main jail is already overcrowded and could not handle anymore inmates.

The authority tabled the issue at their meeting, but plan on discussing the proposals after the new fiscal year in July.
