Baby Found in Dumpster: New Disturbing Details

5-11-04 - A man searching for aluminum cans outside a Durant apartment complex made a gruesome discovery Monday afternoon when he found a dead baby wrapped in a towel inside a dumpster. But by early evening, a 24 year old Durant woman had come forward to police, claiming the child belonged to her.

Today, police say that baby was born before they originally thought. The woman originally told police she gave birth to the baby girl 2 days ago inside a friend's apartment. But last night she told police the little girl was actually born on April 23rd. Police are not releasing the woman's name but say she gave birth to the baby in a bathtub in a friend's apartment.

She says she passed out during labor-- when she woke up, she claims the baby was dead. Police say the woman put the infant in a trash bag and then in a closet where it stayed for more than two weeks. Yesterday she moved it to the dumpster.

The child was found at the Le Chateau apartment complex on 2nd and Mulberry just after 2pm. The baby's body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner who will determine how she died.
