5-10-04 - No charges will be filed against a local soldier who fell asleep at the wheel and caused an accident that killed a father and his teenage son.

David Macomber, 19, was on his way home from a weekend army drill when he fell asleep at the wheel on Highway 69 near Whitewright, crossed the center line, and hit another car head-on. His vehicle collided with another driven by 39 year old Lonnie Andrews and his 15 year old son Joshua. They both died at the scene.

Two months later, Whitewright police have closed the case. They call the accident a terrible tragedy but say there was no criminal intent. As for David, he’s still recovering at a military hospital in San Antonio, after spending nearly one month in a coma. He remains on a ventilator.
