Durant Votes Yes on Sports Complexes

5-11-04 - Voters in Durant passed tax hikes Tuesday that will pay for two new sports complexes. Proposition 1 passed with 61% voting yes, while Proposition 2 passed with 58% voting yes. Just over 2,100 people voted.

Each proposition represents a ¼ cent tax hike, which raises the city’s sales tax to 8.5 cents per every dollar spent. The money will pay for two new sports facilities. The first, a $6.2 million sports complex for area youth to be built on 177 acres off highway 78. The 2nd proposition will build a $9 million sports arena at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. It will be available to the public.

In Murray County, voters said no to a proposed hotel/motel tax. Out of 1235 total votes, 52% said no.

In Lone Grove, a $5 million school bond election passed, garnering 72% of 463 votes. The money will pay for repairs and a new high school.
