Fallen Lawmen Remembered in Carter County

5-12-04 - Local law enforcement held a tribute to fallen officers in Carter County Wednesday. 11 lawmen have been killed in the line of duty since 1920, and a monument honors each one.

At the mid-morning memorial service, officers fired a 21-gun salute and laid flowers at the memorial. The most recent officer to die was Doug Durrington, a Healdton police officer, killed in a car accident in 1985 during a pursuit. His daughter Kimberly is a member of the Leonard police department and attends the memorial service each year.

May 15th marks National Peace Officer Memorial Day.
