ARDMORE, Okla. -- Police in Ardmore say they were forced to shoot a vicious dog over the Memorial Day weekend as it tried to attack.

It happened around five o’clock Sunday afternoon in the 400 block of Moore Street Southeast.

Neighbors called and said a pit bull was running free. Officers tried to catch the dog with a net, but they say it began charging them so an officer shot the dog.

Police say the dog's owner told them he would have done the same thing if he was in their position.

There needs to be a sensible balance here. Pit bulls are not BAD dogs, their OWNERS are. Evidently, the owner thought this dog was dangerous-- We had a pit bull and he was the sweetest dog ever. He WAS a good watch dog and would not allow strangers in the yard. They can be taught manners and obedience like any other animal. But they are mistreated, abused, and taken advantage of. It's too bad there are so many ugly, dangerous, selfish, criminalistic people who give these dogs a bad name.

I know the pit bull is a very mean and viscious dog but let's face it.. it's not the dogs fault it's that way. Man bred that dog to be the way it is. The dog did not do it to it self. Man did it! And now we have this viscious dog on are hands and we don't know what to do with it. A hundred years or more back they first started breeding this type of dog it was acceptable. It was a sport and that's what people did back then they fought dogs, chickens and people and no body gave it a second thought, in fact people enjoyed it and had fun with it was their sport and thats how people lived back then. But now times have changed we don't live like that any more.. but guess what people we still have that viscious dog on are hands. And now people are in a up roar about it and alot people don't want it around any more. So.. what to do, what to do! Me.. I personally think they just need to quit breeding the dog. Yes I know alot of people won't like that ideal and be pissed off that I said it, but lets face it that type of dog just does not belong in this time period any more. And I think it's a shame to kill any animal that you really don't have to. Like I said they did not ask to be born and I don't think we need to go on a killing spree either. There are some pit bulls that are not mean at all I know because I had one. We just need to control what we do have and STOP breeding that type dog. We need to be more responsible for our action and we need to look at what might happen in the future when we try and bred animals together that GOD did not mean to be here.

Pit bulls are bred for one purpose only. to kill each other for the pleasure of sick individuals that drool over the bloody mayhem. They were never meant to be pets. If you folks that have these animals would check into the facts you would also find out that they also are bred to have a never give up fighting spirit that makes these animals popular among Pit Bull sub humans. Are you really willing to trust this animal with a two year old that jabs him in the eye or thumps his nose. These animals can lay around for years just being what you raised them to be, Docile, but then tragedy is always a possibility when dogs are bred for violence both physically and mentally. Why take the chance? Get yourself a Shnauzer.

If the owner knows that his or her dog is more than likely to bite, that dog should be put down. Why take a chance on getting someone hurt.

Personally, I think everyone here who agreed with the statement that all "Viscious" Dogs should be put down at birth, and thier breed eridicated are complete morons.. I would like to know your definition of a "Viscious" Dog.. From person experience any dog can go nuts and bite. My 3 year old son, was put in the hospital last year, by his grandmothers chihuahua.(Hes doing just fine now. Barely even a scar.) Totally un-provoked i might add. So if you think we should put down all dogs that have the potenitial to be visicious, then we would have to put down every breed of dog on earth. Because if they are mistreated, and not cared for properly, they are liable as not to bite you.

i have to disagree that all pittbulls should be put to sleep i am a proud owner of a 2 pittbulls that would not harm a flea but they were raised by us and they were NOT raised to be mean dogs. i beleive the owner should be liable for their own vicious dogs no matter what breed. i have seen mean rotts, chows, and my mother owned a ankle biting chihuahua. i do agree that they need to be confined to their own yard and not be able to run around loose.

Pit Bulls have sure gotten a bad rap. They and any other dogs are only as vicious as their owner makes them. We have a brennal pit bull that is just as calm and obedient as any of our other dogs that we have.

Why sugar coat it? Why not lead with "Pit bull shot and owner euthanized? You never hear "Collie dog bites child" or "Terrior terrorized neighborhood". Pit bull owners know their dogs can be viscious and take great pride in the fact.
