Did Rumsfeld Order Abuse?

Iraqi Prisoner Abuse

5-16-04- The New Yorker magazine says Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld approved a secret plan allowing guards to sexually humiliate and physically coerce Iraqi prisoners. The Pentagon calls that story "filled with error" and "outlandish."

Journalist Seymour Hersh says the ball is in Congress' court following a story he wrote accusing top administration officials of approving some physical and sexual intimidation in Iraq.

Hersh's story in The New Yorker magazine accuses Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and others of approving a plan encouraging physical coercion and sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners.

Rice has dismissed the charges, claiming there is nothing to the story, but the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee says there will be an investigation.

Hersh says the Pentagon still has serious questions to answer, including whether officials diverted a secret group of interrogators to Iraq last fall.

Hersh says many in the military are appalled at the prisoner abuse scandal and are calling for a clear, thorough investigation.
