ARDMORE, OK -- Local firefighters are warning to area residents that overloading electrical outlets and using extension cords in place of permanent wiring can be dangerous, and can even spark flames, after fire destroyed an Ardmore home early Monday morning.

Firefighters tell us the initial call came in about midnight of a fire in a home in the 500 block of Oak Street. Firefighters say the flames started in a converted garage. Investigators say extension cords were installed through a wall, and an overloaded electrical strip was found underneath a bed.

"Anytime you're pulling more amps, it's got a chance of overheating. You've got to be careful," Ardmore Fire Marshal Clyde Ellis says.

Firefighters say the home is probably not a total loss, but estimate damages to be close to $70,000.
