Van Alstyne, TX--A local fire and EMS crew was recently recognized on a national level for their knowledge of emergency management services and they're putting that knowledge to work right here in Texoma. Daniel Armbruster reports.

If need help in an emergency you'd want to be treated by first responders who are familiar with just about any emergency situation. Recently, the Van Alstyne Fire Department's EMS crew was recognized for their extensive knowledge at the Texas EMS conference and not only did they rank number one in the state. They placed high nationally as well.

The competition is called the Valsalva Bows and it's described as a fast-paced Jeopardy style quiz game that tests responder’s knowledge of Emergency Medical Services.
Several teams, made up of three medics a piece, compete against medics from other areas of the state. Tuesday night at the Van Alstyne City Council meeting, the fire department was recognized by city leaders. The team made up of Lieutenant Landon Smith, Jeremy Powell, and Ryan Dockery won first place in the state of Texas.
The following day, the Van Alstyne team made up of Smith, Dockery, and Brendon Snapp placed third in a national competition.
Even more amazing, the guys who placed for Van Alstyne aren't even licensed yet. They're still in training at Grayson College. Van Alstyne Fire Chief Frank Baker says he couldn't be more proud of his staff...

"With them competing against nurses and PAs and emergency physicians...That's outstanding for them to become first in the state,” said Baker.

Also important to note, a team from Paris Junior College placed second in the state competition.
