SBC Workers Strike Deal

05-25-04 - A tentative agreement has been reached between SBC Communications and the Communications Workers of America. Negotiators reached a proposed five-year deal early this morning; just hours after a four day strike came to a close.

Union officials say the new deal boosts wages by 12 percent, plus adds a one percent lump sum in the first year and cost of living adjustments in the fourth and fifth years. The initial wage increase is retroactive to April 4th, when the last contract expired. On average, SBC employees will receive base wage increases of 2.3% per year for five years and lump sums averaging $300 a year.

The deal is still subject to ratification by union members in 13 states.

Employees walked off the job Friday and picketed at facilities across the country to put pressure on SBC, but never intended for the strike to go beyond four days. Many union members returned to work after midnight as planned, the agreement came soon after.
