SHERMAN, TX - When eight-year-old Daphne Hattaway learned of an elderly Whitewright woman in need, she thought of all the ways she could help raise money to repair the woman's dilapidated home.

"Well her house looks like it was hit by a mini tornado. There were holes in the roof and the roof was caving in, light fixtures with wires just hanging down,” Daphne described the crumbling house.

As part of her Sunday school class' lesson on compassion, Daphne’s teacher showed the kids a picture of an elderly woman's home as part of new project for December.

"Her first reaction was we need to buy this lady a new house, but she decided that she was going to try to find a way to raise money,” said her mother Laura.

Daphne couldn't believe her eyes when she saw the home.

"When I saw this lady's house, like I said I didn't know how someone could live like that and I just really wanted to help her because it looked really bad,” explained Daphne.

At Sherman Bible Church the kindergarten through 5th graders are raising money throughout the month of December to do extensive repairs on the home as Part of Project CrossWalk.

"My mom asked me what types of stuff we could actually do to raise money for this lady and there were a couple of other things and then I was like “maybe I could sell of my stuff?” said Daphne.

So Daphne picked out several of her own belongings to post on E-Bay.

"That she was really moved by this lady's living situation, that encouraged me a lot and so I thought we have to get on this while she's excited and while she thinks we've got to help this lady so it was really encouraging,” said her mother.

Now she's packing up those beloved toys, even her Lion King doll, which she says was a tough one to part with. But for Daphne it's all worth it in the end.

"It just feels good because you think they're going to have a happier life and it may work. So they may have a better life when you do it and give compassion. It will probably change their life,” said Daphne.

So far she’s raised $63 from the first round of toys up for auction on E-Bay. But the ones that didn’t sell she’s plans to repost and maybe even add a few more to the site. Her Sunday school class has a little over $200 so far and could still use your help.
