Thomas The Train Recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, has announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The toy in question is various Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway Toys made by RC2 Corp., of Oak Brook, IL.

About one a half million units of the toy are involved. The reason for the recall is surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

Mountain Bike Recall

Nearly 7,000 mountain bikes have been recalled due to a problem that can cause riders to fall and get hurt.

Cannondale Bicycle Corporation said the forks on the Lefty Speed SL and Lefty Speed DLR can break during use.

The company has received more than a dozen reports of the forks breaking, causing some injuries.

Cribs Recalled

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: Nursery-in-a-Box Cribs

Manufacturer: Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.

Hazard: The assembly instructions provided with the cribs incorrectly instruct consumers how to attach the crib’s drop side. If improperly installed, the drop side can disengage from the crib, posing fall and entrapment hazards for the child. Additionally, the metal locking pins on the drop side can pop off, presenting a choking hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of an incident in which the crib’s drop side, which was installed upside down, fell from its upright position and the metal locking pins became dislodged. Simplicity received a report of wrong instructions being packaged with the crib.

Description: The recalled cribs are part of the Nursery-in-a-Box furniture set which also includes a changing table and clothing organizer. The cribs are cherry, white or natural in color. Only model numbers 8910 and 8050 with serial numbers 3005 HY through 0806 HY are included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are printed on an envelope permanently attached to the mattress support. “Simplicity,” model and serial numbers are also printed on a label on the bottom rail of the headboard.

Sold at: Department stores and children’s product stores from August 2005 through May 2007 for about $200.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately check the crib to make sure the drop side is securely fastened and correctly installed. Contact Simplicity to receive correct assembly instructions, or consumers can download the assembly instructions at the firm’s Web site, www.simplicityforchildren.com. Consumers can view a video on the firm’s Web site showing the proper assembly of the drop side. If the drop side is not properly installed, consumers should stop using the crib until it is assembled correctly.

Birthday Hat Recall

Name of Product: Children’s Party Hats

Hazard: Foil fringe glued to the bottom edge of the party hats can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Description: The paper party hats involved in this recall measure 6.5-inches high by 4.5-inches wide and are cone shaped. The blue paper hats have “1st” printed on the front and blue foil fringe glued to the bottom.

Sold at: Party and discount department stores nationwide from February 2005 through May 2007 for about $4.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should discard the hats immediately and contact Creative Expressions to receive a full refund.

Stove Cook Top Recall

Hazard: The cooktop can come on by itself when switched off, creating a potential fire hazard if flammable items are left on the cooktop.

Incidents/Injuries: None.

Description: The cooktop has electric and induction heating elements with a black ceramic glass surface. This recall involves model numbers CIT302DS/01 and CIT362DS/01 with date codes between 8606 and 8612. The model number and date code can be found on the underside of the cooktop.

Sold at: Appliance and specialty stores nationwide from October 2006 through March 2007 for between $1,800 and $2,200.

Manufactured in: Spain

Remedy: Consumers should disconnect the cooktop at the circuit breaker when not in use, and never leave anything on the cooktop when it is unattended. Contact BSH Home Appliances for a free in-home repair.
