5-29-04- President Bush, speaking on Washington's Mall
for the dedication of the World War Two memorial, calls it "a
fitting tribute -- open and expansive like America."

He spoke to the thousands of gathered surviving veterans as well
as dignitaries including former Presidents Bush and Clinton and
actor Tom Hanks.

Earlier, former Senator Bob Dole, a veteran himself who led
fund-raising for the granite and bronze structure, acknowledged the
ranks of veterans are "dwindling."

Many of the old soldiers, some holding canes or in wheelchairs,
could be seen wearing their uniforms. While grateful for the
memorial, some say it comes too late for many fellow soldiers who
have died in recent years. Only about one in four veterans of the
war is still alive.
