VA Fire Chief Steps Down

6-1-04 - After months of controversy, the Van Alstyne Fire Chief has resigned. Robert Lewis resigned Tuesday after completing a 30 day suspension, but its still not clear why he stepped down.

The trouble began two months ago when Lewis was accused by a female paramedic of sexual harassment. Despite support for Lewis from volunteer firefighters, the city council finally decided to suspend Lewis for 30 days without pay.

Before his suspension, Lewis discovered a case of drug tampering in his department. A state lab confirmed a vile of morphine had been tampered with - but so far, investigators haven't determined who was responsible.

Lewis did not return calls for comment today, but Police Chief Robert Spindle says Lewis told him he felt it was best for everyone if he stepped down.

An interim chief will be appointed later this week.
