6-2-04 - A special reunion took place on Lake Texoma Wednesday, as three former sailors saw one another for the first time in more than 60 years. But it was a reunion born from a disaster during a hellacious battle in the Pacific.

John Hurt, Wayne Wells and Hank Schubert were all sailors aboard the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier commissioned at the start of World War II. But on October 26, 1942, at the Battle of Santa Cruz, the Hornet faced overwhelming Japanese forces, and was sunk after repeated aerial attacks, including kamikaze suicide planes.

The three friends survived, but hadn’t seen one another since. Thanks to the internet, the men tracked each other down this year, and chose today for a reunion – the 63rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
