Earthquake Shakes Carter County

earthquake mgn

06-8-04 - Parts of Southern Oklahoma felt the effects of a minor earthquake Monday evening. Initial estimates showed the quake hit a 2.7 on the Richter scale. The Oklahoma Geological Survey now puts the quake at a 3.7.

There are no reports of injuries or major damages. The shaking rattled windows and knocked pictures off of walls. It started at 7:09pm and was centered near Lone Grove and 8 miles northwest of Ardmore.

Emergency management crews recommend homeowners check the foundations around their houses and report any gas line ruptures.

This is not the first earthquake in Oklahoma this year. In January, Jefferson County reported a 2.6 magnitude quake. Garvin County felt a 2.3 magnitude earthquake in April. In 1952, the largest earthquake in state history was reported in El Reno, Oklahoma. It measured at 5.5 on the Richter scale.
