Power Restored After Lightning Strike in Ardmore

6-18-04 - Storms triggered a power outage in Ardmore that sent law enforcement and emergency crews scrambling. It happened around 1:45pm Friday when lightning hit a substation.

Most of the outages were confined to the 5,500 homes in the southeastern quadrant of Ardmore.

One of the hardest places hit was at city hall, where the lightning sent sparks and flames shooting from the walls of the police department's dispatch center. It knocked out all the communications equipment, along with the communications at the emergency operations command post. Emergency calls were re-routed through the sheriff's department and the Southern Oklahoma Ambulance Center. OG&E crews got the power back on around 3:30pm, and by 5pm, the police department had their communication center working.
