(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma County District Attorney Wes Lane defends his decision to pursue state murder charges against Terry Nichols.

Nichols was convicted of murder for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing, but the jury couldn't agree to sentence him to death as sought by prosecutors.

Some criticize the amount of money spent to prosecute Nichols since he'll receive life in prison, a sentence he's already serving for federal convictions.

Lane says in a letter to the editor of The Oklahoman that the trial gave Oklahomans killed in the bombing their day in court. He also says the money spent on the trial did not come from taxpayers, but a court fund.

And Lane says Nichols refused to accept responsibility for his actions by offering to plead "no contest," rather than guilty to the murder charges.
