Murder in Grayson County? - Trial Begins

6-21-04 - The trial for a Whitesboro woman accused of murdering a well-known jeweler began Monday in Grayson County with jury selection. Kristie Jones was arrested in June of 2003 after authorities say she fired a .357 handgun and killed McCullough outside her home.

Investigators say McCullough had accompanied his sister in law to the home to pick up a large smoker when an argument began between the two women. McCullough was trying to break up the fight when he was shot. Prosecutors say Jones meant to fire that deadly shot, part of a history of bad blood between herself and McCullough.

On Monday, Jones sat quietly between her attorneys in the courtroom, occasionally turning to see her family seated behind her. The judge considered several motions from the prosecution concerning what will and will not be allowed into evidence. Both sides also selected a jury - opening arguments begin Tuesday.

If convicted of murder, Jones could face five to 99 years or life in prison.
