6-22-04 - The battle over commercial trash in Sherman will last at least another 30 days as both sides sort out a controversial petition. On Tuesday, District Judge Ray Grisham issued a 30-day injunction that will prevent the city from taking over commercial trash service.
The temporary injunction gives City Clerk Linda Ashby ten days to give the exact reason why 1,100 of the signatures on a petition were disqualified. Initially, city leaders said the signatures were invalid because they either lacked date of birth, voter registration, or were duplicates.
IESI, a commercial trash provider, will then have 20 days to get submit new signatures. They need 1,640 for an election to be called on the issue. Sherman announced last winter that they planned to take over commercial trash operation to provide consistent rates for businesses.
