7-7-04 - Last week's train derailment south of Ardmore is bringing new attention to a continuing problem for the fire department. Nearly one year ago, Ardmore firefighters were chosen to receive federal funding from the Department of Homeland Security – money that was to be paid through state agencies to purchase hazardous materials equipment.
Ardmore was one of 20 departments across the state picked for the grants, but they’re still waiting on the state to follow through. Ardmore Fire Chief J.D. Spahn says it puts his firefighters in a tough spot, and like with the train derailment, unable to give a full response to an emergency scene.
First News checked with the state department in charge of the grant distribution. Officials there say they’re waiting on federal approval, and have no idea how long the process could take.
