SHERMAN -- A Sherman church is making more room for its parishioners. Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman broke ground on a new church Thursday evening.
Church leaders turned the dirt at the future site of the altar. The new church is named after the Catholic saint known as Mary's mother, Saint Anne. It will be located directly across the street from St. Mary's.
Architects say the nearly the 16,000 square foot building will seat about 750 people, about three times larger than the sister sanctuary.
"The first ceremony was held in the 1906 church, this very day, July 26, 1906, so 101 years later we are embarking on construction of another church so this day is very special to us," said Father Jeremy Myers, pastor of the Saint Mary’s parish.
Construction is set to begin next month, and should be completed in early 2009.
