SHERMAN -- A Sherman church is making more room for its parishioners. Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman broke ground on a new church Thursday evening.

Church leaders turned the dirt at the future site of the altar. The new church is named after the Catholic saint known as Mary's mother, Saint Anne. It will be located directly across the street from St. Mary's.

Architects say the nearly the 16,000 square foot building will seat about 750 people, about three times larger than the sister sanctuary.

"The first ceremony was held in the 1906 church, this very day, July 26, 1906, so 101 years later we are embarking on construction of another church so this day is very special to us," said Father Jeremy Myers, pastor of the Saint Mary’s parish.

Construction is set to begin next month, and should be completed in early 2009.

Thanks for covering this event. You can tell him pastor or priest or father is fine. This is not important, the important part is that we are going to have a new big church and everybody is welcome and we all will be able to seat.

I guess I may have been wrong and no I don't read the bulletin all that closely. I have been a Catholic all my life and I have never refered to him as a pastor. I have also never heard anyone in my family refer to him as a pastor but I guess it's not a big thing, we all do things a little different like some allow their children to come to church in a short skirt or a pair of short shorts which I would never allow but the important thing is that we attend and that we be very thankful for the new building. I for one am very excited about it.

"Priest of the church not the pastor"???? Better check your facts !! Yes, while at the ceremony last night, looking across the street at St.Mary's, the old girl was looking rather tired. But most of us are at that age.

Mary, Father Jeremy has been the Pastor of St. Mary's for 12 years (haven't you ever read the front of the church bulletin?) and is obviously a Catholic priest and has been for over 20 years! Yay, for the new church & thanks to God for answering our prayers and to Father Jeremy and everybody involved for all their hard work and dedication!

Father Jeremy is the Priest of the church not the pastor but we are very excited about our new church. I have seen many a day where I had to stand at the back of the church because it was so full, this is just wonderful.
