Library Funds Will Not Be Cut

7-14-04 – A Grayson County Commissioners Court ruled Wednesday that libraries in Grayson County will continue to receive the same amount of funding, despite worries of budget cuts.

County officials did consider cutting library funding for the 2nd straight year, which could have forced smaller libraries like Whitesboro and Van Alstyne to charge county residents for services.

Last year, the county cut the funding in half, to less than $40,000. Denison and Sherman broke off entirely, and started charging residents who lived outside the city limits $40 for a library card.

In a decision made Wednesday morning, commissioners said the budgets of small town libraries will not be cut and they will continue to receive $1,000 a year from the county.
Many school children were on hand for the announcement, speaking out on the importance of keeping the library’s funding.
