7-12-04 - The Bonham stockyards were back in business Monday for the first time since it was closed in a financial scandal 2 years ago.

Cattleman claim the lost hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Bonham Livestock Auction, and the closing was followed by a state and federal investigation shut it down two years ago.

Now under new ownership with a new name, the Bonham Stockyards is a much needed relief for local ranchers. Most of those in attendance for the Monday sale used to have to drive at least 30 miles to auction their cattle, an added expense to them all.

Monday, 850 cattle were sold – a number owner David Minyard hopes to double before the end of the year. Cattlemen say the opening is perfect timing since cattle prices are rebounding.

The former owners of the auction were charged with several counts of theft by check.
