Manhunt Scaled Back in Johnston County

7-21-04 – State law enforcement agencies have scaled back a manhunt along the Johnston and Coal County line near Bromide Wednesday morning. Sheriff’s deputies and police officers are still, however, searching for a man who attacked a police officer and an elderly woman within hours of each other.

The first incident happened at 7:30 Monday night, when the Wapanucka police chief stopped to check on a pedestrian. The Hispanic man and Chief John Bynum got into a fight, and the suspect cut the officer with a box cutter.

Then just after 12pm on Tuesday, he broke into an elderly woman’s home in nearby Bromide and attacker her from behind, hitting her in the head. From there, neighbors chased the man into some nearby woods, where he escaped.

Late Tuesday, authorities converged on the wooded area, using police dogs, a helicopter and tactical teams. Early Wednesday morning, Oklahoma Highway Patrol sent a helicopter back into the air to try and find the man, but at 8am decided to call off the air search.

Local law enforcement is still conducting roaming patrols in the area.

The suspect is a Hispanic male, 5'4" tall, in his late 30's or early 40's wearing a green shirt and blue jeans. He is considered armed and dangerous.
