Investigation of Sherman fire chief continues

SHERMAN, Tex. -- City officials placed Sherman fire Chief Jeff Jones on administrative leave two weeks ago. Now, the chief sits at home waiting for the findings.

Even though Jeff Jones is on paid administrative leave, he is on call 8-to-5 in case he's needed at the fire station. But he says he's sat at home for the past two weeks waiting for the investigation to be completed.

Chief Jones was not available for an on-camera interview this afternoon but told us he is satisfied with the progress of the investigation and expects it to be resolved soon after speaking with his attorney and city manager George Olson.

The city hired a firm out of Dallas to conduct the investigation. Jones says is he is supposed to speak with the investigator sometime next week after the investigator conducts one more interview.

Olson says it's best Jones stays on-call but on administrative leave for the integrity of the investigation, and Jones says he feels good that the city is working to find the answers in this case.

"Obviously, I want to get it over with as much as I’m sure Chief Jones does, and the community, and the fire department. So we just have to do what we have to do sometimes, and this is one of those instances," said Sherman city manager George Olson.

Chief Jones told me he is glad the investigation will clear up any allegations and says it's important for those in public service spending taxpayer money to be accountable for any actions.

Tommy sounds like a very small minded person. I would lay odds that he hasn't found happiness in his career. Obviously he finds power in making others look small and ineffective. He fits the profile of one who likes to find fault in anything he can't control. If he is in the Fire Service, he hasn't been fortunate enough to see the big picture. He confuses overkill with preparedness. Emergency work is not an exact science. It can not be controlled, it can not make every one happy. If Tommy is truely in the Fire Service, he has most assuredly outlived his effectiveness to those that he should serve. Sorry you didn't promote, didn't get the raise you wanted, had to get up at night to help someone that was less of a man than you are. Whatever your excuse to carry that chip on your shoulder, let it go. You shine a bad light on those who really care. You drag others down and decrease everyone's effectiveness.

I'm not whining at all! I'm simply taking issue with the culture that exists at the SFD, which has resulted in Sherman changing Fire Chiefs as often as most of us trade in our cars! We can bury ourselves in propaganda until the cows come home, but the bottom line is, that there have been, and perhaps always will be, major internal problems in that department. Who's whining and complaining? Not me. I'm just pointing out the obvious. Regardless of where you live in Grayson County, if your 9-1-1 call results in SFD being dispatched, you'll get an overkill of men and equipment, which the county then gets to subsidize. So, you don't just have to live in the Sherman City Limits to be affected by what goes on at SFD. Chief Jones was an excellent chief, who stood by his men, unlike your "lifer" captain, who is also on leave. Your "on leave" captain stabbed me in the back more than once. Good riddance to him.

I do not live in Sherman, but know lots of people who do, including law and fire personnel. Tommy you make SFD sound like a group of terrorists. That is far from the truth. You have given me a vision of a very bitter and angry man. Perhaps that is your personality and possibly why you did not bond in brotherhood with SFD. You commented earlier that you left SFD and are happy about that. You left!!! So why do you feel it necessary to continue whining, complaining and trying to make trouble? Let it go. If you live in Denison it's not your city taxes being spent. Let it go!!!

A brother canned be defined in multiple ways, but a true brother is someone who is willing to lay down his life for the one he stands beside in battle. A brother does not degrade his department behind a curtain on a public website.

Jenkins, if there are 10 standing in line to take our places, why has the SFD chief spent the last 8 months trying to get raises for his new recruits? Cuz they're passing up Sherman for other cities, that's why. As to "brotherhood", it depends on what you really call a "brother". I'm not going to stand by a group of ungrateful militants out of some sense of "brotherhood", when I know they're wrong. We have the greatest gig on the planet, and all some of our so-called "brothers" do is whine, complain, and make trouble. I wouldn't trade my job with anyone. I also believe that I should respect my employer, aka "the city" that I work for, whether it be management, elected officials, or the ultimate boss, the citizens. I am not doing them a favor by being a firefighter, I have been given a privledge.

Who is this Tommy, Larry and Chris. If each of you is a member of SFD you should be ashamed of yourself to degrade your department on a news website with bitter words of attack back and forth. This is not the place for such acts. The fire service is about brotherhood, pride, honor and intergrity. Looks like you need a gut check about your love for the job. You should be stand up citizens for your community and department. This is not the place to settle department politics. Your only hurting the image of SFD and the people who make it function. If you don't love it leave it. There will be 10 more standing in line to take your place and help make a positive impact on the community in which it serves.

Tommy...Can you clear something up for me? Can you just tell me EXACTLY what your experience is in Sherman and why you want to continue to spread lies. Is your real name Larry?
  • by Tommy Location: Denison on Aug 3, 2007 at 01:53 PM
Chris, who are you to be telling me what to say and not say? Is this not a country of free speech? I have as much right to voice my opinion as anyone else here. And, I have TONS of experience to speak from. I didn't say anything negative on this particular story regarding Chief Jones, or the department, but you chose to blast off with a threat. Threats which have historically been so typical of the SFD mentality. And, I most definetely speak from experience. If the truth is negative, so be it!! Better than burying our heads in meaningless fanfare. Shouldn't you be out in your fire truck playing racketball or shopping, or something?

there have been no details as to what the investigation is for. Tommy let me just say now before you get started again like you did the last story about chief Jones, I for one do not want to listen to your mouth flap this time. If you can not make an intelligent educated comment about what is going on then keep your mouth shut about our chief and the rest of the department. If people read other blogs on this site they will see that you seem to have nothing better to do than spread your negativity around about everything going on in this area. I only speak for myself here but if you have anything negative to say about SFD this time you know where we are that is if you have the guts to step out from behind the safety of your keyboard. Which I doubt you do!!!
