High Speed Chase-- Child in Backseat

7-24-04- A six year old girl is safe Saturday night after police discovered her in the backseat of a car that led them on a high speed chase through a Sherman neighborhood Friday night.

Sherman police are not sure why the suspect ran Friday night when an officer tried to pull him over for failing to stop at a stop sign. The chase ended just before 10 p.m. Friday on Gallagher road, near Dillingham Intermediate school. Police say the man bottomed out his car, shattered an oil pan and spun out of control. Next, the suspect took off on foot. Police discovered a six year old girl in the backseat. She was not injured.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect, but they do say he is a hispanic man from Sherman. They are not releasing his relationship with the little girl.

The man is still on the run, but will be charged with evading police and child endangerment. Warrants have been issued for the man's arrest.
