Thomas Competent to Stand Trial

7-30-04 - A Sherman man accused in a gruesome triple murder case has been found competent to stand trial.

Andre Thomas is charged with the murders of his estranged wife Laura, their son Andre, and her daughter Leyha Hughes. Police say Thomas stabbed them multiple times inside their apartment last spring, and then mutilated their bodies.

But late Friday afternoon, a psychiatrist at Vernon Mental Hospital declared Thomas competent.

Two other doctors already found him incompetent to stand trial, and said it would take a least 120 days for him to be capable of understanding his surroundings.

Grayson County Attorney Joe brown says today's findings make it possible to set a trial date which will probably begin in the fall.

Thomas' attorneys have said their client was insane at the time of the murders. Since his arrest, he gouged out his own eye inside a jail cell.
