Man Risks Life to Save Elderly Neighbor

8-1-04- When his elderly neighbor's home went up in flames, Steve Norris made a heroic move. He rushed inside to save the woman, but after combing the house, Norris found his neighbor was not home and was overwhelmed by the thick smoke.

Firefighters arrived at the home in the 1900 block of South Fannin Street in Denison to find Norris face down in the front of the house. The concerned neighbor was suffering from smoke inhalation, but firefighters were able to get him out of the house without any further injuries.

Investigators believe an air conditioning window unit caught fire in a front bedroom and spread to the rest of the home. Firefighters fought the fire and hot spots for more than an hour and some were overcome by the heat and smoke.

Firefighters say the home is not a total loss, but there is substantial damage. The woman who lived in the house was not home at the time.

The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
