Double Fatality Near Marietta

8-1-04 - Two men were killed and two others critically injured in an early morning accident on Sunday along I-35. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says it happened ay the 18.5 mile marker in Love County around 2:20am when a 1997 Pontiac 2 door rolled several times.

The car's driver, 18-year-old Rene Mercado-Balderas of Gainesville, and 21-year-old passenger Santos Juan Popoca of Dallas died at the scene. Two other Gainesville men, Martinez Rene Hurtado and Jony Morales are both in critical condition.

Troopers say the car was southbound when the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the road, went into a broadslide and then flipped 5 times, ejected all four men. Troopers say the driver smelled of alcohol and was speeding at the time. No one in the car was wearing a seat belt.
