Teacher Sex Scandal, Letourneau Leaves Prison

08-04-04 - GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) The school teacher who spent more than seven years in prison for having sex with a 12 year old student has been released. Mary Kay Letourneau left a Washington state corrections center overnight.

As a condition of her release, Letourneau has been ordered to stay away from her former pupil and child lover Vili Fualaau. Now 21, Fualaau can ask a judge to dissolve the no-contact order, but Washington state courts haven't gotten such a request.

He told local TV yesterday he's "kind of nervous" and doesn't know how to feel, other than knowing he loves her.

After seven and a half years in the Washington Corrections Center for Women prison, the 42 year old slipped unnoticed past hordes of reporters and gawkers. A prison spokeswoman announced the release early this morning.

As a sex offender, Letourneau has to register with the state and receive court ordered treatment. Authorities will notify her new neighbors.

Letourneau was a 34 year old teacher in suburban Seattle when she started flirting with the 12 year old and then seduced him. They have two children.
