Hit and Run Suspect Surrenders to Authorities

08-05-04 – The suspect involved in a deadly hit and run accident surrendered to authorities in Pushmataha County overnight Wednesday after nearly two days on the run.

Authorities began a manhunt Tuesday night for a man, they believe; hit another car at around 8:45pm near Miller Jumbo Road and State Highway 3 near the Pushmataha - Atoka county line.

Seventy two year old Jonas Johnson of Moyers died. A passenger, 20 year old Stanley Johnson, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The man driving the other vehicle, a 1971 GMC truck, left the scene on foot. Authorities believe he broke into a nearby home within ten minutes of the accident. A firefighter on the scene saw the suspect and approached him; the suspect hit the firefighter, knocking him down.

Investigators believe the driver of the truck did not have his headlights on when he broadsided the other vehicle. That man faces a manslaughter charge.
