08-06-04 - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Governor Brad Henry is urging lawmakers to consider appointing officials to some statewide offices instead of electing them. Henry's comments come in the wake of a House investigation into the possible impeachment of Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher.

Fisher is facing felony charges related to the illegal operation of a charity and embezzlement.

A proposal to have the governor appoint the insurance commissioner, labor commissioner and other positions died in the Legislature this spring.

Oklahoma is one of 11 states that elects an insurance commissioner. The others are Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, North Dakota, California, Washington and Montana.

Oklahoma also elects its labor commissioner, treasurer, superintendent of public education, attorney general and state auditor and inspector.
