8-10-04 - The Texas National Guard is calling 3,000 soldiers to active duty, including 70 members of the 1-112 Armor Unit, based in Denison.

This weekend the soldiers will leave for training at Fort Hood, and then be assigned to Operation Iraqi Freedom, a tour of duty that could last from 18 months to 2 years. The soldiers don’t know precisely what they’ll be doing yet or where they’ll be stationed.

The Guard began preparing for the deployment last month, but the 1-112 soldiers actually volunteered. The 70 members hail from towns like Denison, Whitewright and Telephone.

This is the first time Texas National Guard soldiers have been deployed overseas since World War II.
