Cooking Icon Dies

8-13-04 - NEW YORK (AP) An icon of the kitchen has died. Her publisher says Julia Child died yesterday in her sleep at her home in Santa Barbara, California. She would have turned 92 this weekend.

A spokesman for Alfred A. Knopf publishing says the country "has lost a true national treasure."

Child brought French cuisine to home cooks through her TV series and books.

In the introduction to her seventh book, "The Way to Cook," she wrote that eating with family and friends is "one of life's primal and most innocent delights."

She was so familiar, she was parodied on "Saturday Night Live," and she was once on the cover of Time magazine.
