8-17-04 - AUSTIN (AP) The school finance trial continues in Austin. About 300 school districts have sued the state over the share-the-wealth system.

They argue that its dependence on local property taxes is flawed and unconstitutional, and doesn't spend enough to educate Texas' 4.3 million students.

Monday, lawyers for the school districts tried to discredit a legislative study used to determine the cost of an adequate education in Texas.

The study suggested that it takes about six thousand dollars annually per student to maintain a 55 percent pass rate of the state's annual standardized test; the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS.

That's about 300 dollars less than the average amount spent per student in 2004.
