More $$$ For Teacher Classrooms

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Governor Rick Perry says $3 million more will be available to reimburse teachers who use their own money to buy school supplies.

The 2003 Legislature earmarked $3 million for the program -- but that money quickly was exhausted. Perry says the additional money comes from federal funds.

He made the announcement today at a Texas Education Agency
regional office in San Antonio. TEA commissioner Shirley Neeley welcomed the financial help, saying it will boost the morale of teachers.

Texas school districts can apply for the grants, starting September first, with the money then trickling down to individual teachers.

Under the program, teachers can be reimbursed up to $200 by the state and as much as 200 dollars more from local government
sources.
