Local Volunteers Help Hurricane Victims

8-20-04 – The Red Cross is raising money for hurricane victims in Florida. Local volunteers will be stationed at Midway Mall in Sherman, starting Friday.

Meanwhile, Florida's death toll from Hurricane Charley is now 23. State officials say more than 335,000 homes and businesses still don't have power, almost a week after the storm slammed ashore in west-central Florida.

Charlotte County residents aren't expected to have their electricity fully restored for another ten days.

The Red Cross says Charley destroyed more than 10,000 homes and left at least 16,000 others uninhabitable.

Total damage is estimated at seven-point-four billion dollars, more than any hurricane in Florida since Andrew.

The local volunteers will collect donations until August 27th.
