8-23-04 - WASHINGTON (AP) - New overtime rules pushed by the Bush administration go into effect Monday. There's widespread disagreement over what they'll mean.

The Labor Department says no more than 107,000 workers will lose overtime eligibility as a result of the changes, and about 1.3 million will gain it.

But a liberal Washington think tank, The Economic Policy Institute, says just the opposite. It claims six million workers will lose benefits, and only a few will get new rights to extra pay for working more than 40 hours a week.

The administration and business groups say the new regulations are needed because the old ones were out of date and confusing.

They also say they resulted in numerous multi million-dollar lawsuits.
