Pomp and Protests at Convention

8-29-04- More than 100,000 mostly peaceful demonstrators have filled the streets of midtown Manhattan on the eve of the GOP convention, calling for President Bush to be turned out of office

So far, there are no official police estimates, but one law enforcement official put the crowd at 120,000. Organizers claimed it was roughly
400,000.

The marchers chanted "no more years" and "no more Bush," and
carried coffin like boxes draped in American flags. They were flanked by police in riot gear.

The demonstrators accused Bush of waging an unjust war in Iraq,
making the U.S. poorer and undermining abortion rights. There was no major violence and about 200 scattered arrests, including those of 50 bicyclists in a group.
