General Cable Workers on Strike

Video will be available shortly.

8-29-04- Workers at one of Fannin County's oldest and largest employers are on strike Sunday night. Union workers at General Cable voted Sunday not to accept the new proposed company contract which they say would decrease benefites and eliminate seniority.

Employees say the proposed three-year contract will cut benefits, mandate overtime and eliminate seniority. With a majority of the vote Sunday, workers decided to go on strike. The strike will take effect immediately.

The current contract expires Monday.

Employees say negotiations with the company broke down and Sunday nearly 180 Union members cast their ballots at the Bonham V.A. Hospital.

Members say they notified the company immediately of the strike, but so far, there is no word whether there will be a negotiation meeting.

General Cable develops wire and cable products for communications, energy, and industrial companies.
